Will you add your Peace Light to the map?

Scouts and Guides across the world are joining in a special challenge to share the Peace Light of Bethlehem. The Peace Light travels from country to country, from home to home, and from hand to hand. Receiving the Peace Light and passing it on reflects a message of hope and peace, a message of sharing your inner light.

In early December each year, a young Austrian girl or boy travels to Bethlehem to light a special Peace Light at the Church of the Nativity. The Peace Light then travels back to Vienna, Austria, to be shared with people from all over the world.

Peace Light 2

This year Scouts across the world are encouraged to take part in a special peace light challenge.

The peace project challenge

The peace project challenge invites you to share your inner light and emphasize giving something to others. It could be a smile, a hug or an unexpected act of kindness toward others.

We invite all Scouts to create a project based on initiating a positive change with such a simple act of kindness and inspire others to do the same for others.

Steps to help you get started

These steps can help you create your peace project of the inner light.

  • Think about the act of kindness and peace you want to share with others.
  • Get a friend to share your idea and to help you record your act on video.
  • Pick a place where you want to start and begin your act of kindness.
  • Put together a video and take some pictures as well. Share it on scout.org to inspire others to do the same.
  • Create your project on Scout.org to share your story. Add the number of people involved and how many service hours you invested in your peace project.
  • Share it on social media so that the rest of the world can be inspired.

You can follow the progress of the project by logging on to scout.org/peacelight. It will be available from today until 31 December 2013.

We have created a special challenge for Scouts for the Peace Light of Bethlehem. This challenge encourages you to spread peace through a service project. Create and post your peace project here on scout.org so the world can see what you do for peace.

More about the Peace Light?

On 14 December, Guides and Scouts from all over Europe and beyond will take part in a Sharing Ceremony in Vienna. Participants are invited to light their own candles from the Peace Light, and from there the light will travel to communities all over the world by road, rail or ferry as a symbol of peace and hope. Guides and Scouts have taken part in this ceremony for 25 years, through the active involvement of Pfadfinder und Pfadfinderinnen Österreichs, showing our Movement’s commitment to spreading peace. To allow enough time for the Light to travel as far as possible, it reaches destinations outside Europe a bit earlier. This year, the Peace Light will reach New York in the USA on 4 December, from where it will travel across the USA and onward to Canada, Mexico and beyond.
